How To Sell A Website

by Edward Jackson

It is truly an exciting endeavor when it comes time to unveil a work that has been in progress for what seems like an eternity. Even though there are unanswered questions that may be resident in the back of one's mind when the time comes to sell a website, hope takes the driver's seat. It may have seemed like a dream deferred, but the promise of cashing in on long awaited profits erases the pain. But first thing is first, one needs to know how to prepare to make the sale.

One important step is to examine the site's worth. It is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. Sometimes, it may be difficult to come up with a price. An individual needs to know what price they would be happy to receive, as well as numbers. Other things to consider are the competition, costs, labour to manage the site, how quickly the business grows, potential, and basically, supply and demand.

One way to figure out what a site should be sold for is to look at the revenue taken in from last year and double it. Or one can also look at the company profit and multiply it times ten. Many individuals have all sorts of formulas for selling their business. This is just a place to begin.

Site owners need to be very particular about their selection of buyers, because they don't want just anyone taking over their site. It needs to be maintained, and treated responsibly by taking into consideration the dream the original owner had in mind. The potential owners should have a passion for what they would be doing.

Information is golden in today's society. As much information needs to be gathered and presented to the potential buyer. No one wants to buy a website that they are not confident about or even trust. Present interested parties with the history of visitor traffic, how much the site generates in sales, growth rates, and information regarding PageRank. Every little bit helps to seal the deal.

Many times sites come with a statistics package such as Webalizer or Awstats. Becoming familiar with these site packages can help to accurately gain access to one's site traffic. Profit and loss statements are also good for potential buyers. Showing money received from advertisers or bills that needed to be paid are also good information to provide. Sending an email letter may also be a good move for those that want to introduce their site, themselves, and share the website's history.

It is always a good idea to start locally first when looking for a potential buyer. Most of the time, locals have more of a feel to what is trying to be accomplished. They know the type of audience that they are trying to reach and is more likely to understand the potential of the business.

Soon, when the individual comes across an interested party, they need to be aware of the state of urgency that both a buyer and a seller can present. Power usually rests in the hand of the individual who is not in a desperate state. Regardless of the situation, an individual must make sure they are happy with the terms before sealing the deal.
